Contact to confirm
Connecticut law requires that a signer present at least one current, government-issued photo ID before a notarization can be performed. Acceptable forms include a valid U.S. or foreign passport, a state-issued driver's license or non-driver ID, a U.S. military ID, or a tribal ID card. The document must be unexpired and legible. If you are unable to produce satisfactory ID, the notarization cannot legally proceed — this protects all parties, including you.
Yes. Connecticut enacted legislation permitting Remote Online Notarization (RON) under Public Act 19-36 and subsequent guidance. RON allows a notary and signer to interact via two-way audio-visual communication technology in real time, with the signer's identity verified through knowledge-based authentication (KBA) and credential analysis. Not all notarial acts are eligible for RON. Please contact Fermin directly to discuss whether your specific document and circumstances qualify for a remote notarization.
Under Connecticut law, notaries may not certify copies of vital records (birth certificates, death certificates, or marriage certificates) as those are exclusively certified by the issuing government agency. However, a notary may certify copies of most other original documents — such as diplomas, professional licenses, corporate records, and passports — provided the original document is presented at the time of notarization.
An Acknowledgment confirms that the named signer voluntarily executed the document and appeared before the notary — but does not require the signer to sign in the notary's presence. A Jurat (sometimes called a "sworn statement") requires the signer to sign the document in the notary's presence while under oath. Your document will specify which is required — the certificate wording at the bottom of the document is the controlling language.
A notarization authenticates a signature or copy at the local level. An Apostille is an additional certification issued by the Connecticut Secretary of the State that authenticates the notary's official status — making the document legally recognized in all countries that are signatories to the Hague Apostille Convention. Fermin can prepare and properly notarize your documents so they are ready for submission to the Secretary of the State's office for Apostille processing.
